<p>However, if you are trying to quit smoking, when you do quit you will be a winner. It has been well documented as to the effects of smoking, for example:</p>
<p>1. Smoking Kills (do I need to go on?)</p>
<p>2. Coughing and short of breath, yellow teeth, yellow fingers, reduced fitness and raised blood pressure.</p>
<p>3. Women who smoke have reduced fertility, and men who smoke can suffer impotence.</p>
<p>4. People who smoke usually look older with more wrinkles, than a non-smoker of the same age.</p>
<p>There are plenty more effects, but we should not be looking for negatives, we should be looking for ways to stop smoking.</p>
<p>If you are reading this article because you genuinely are looking for help to stop smoking, for whatever reason, then you should be aware of one thing.</p>
<p>IF YOU DON&#8217;T REALLY WANT TO STOP SMOKING, YOU WON&#8217;T. All the stop smoking tips, and all the stop smoking aids in the world will not help you.</p>
<p>You really must have a burning (no pun intended) desire to stop smoking cigarettes.</p>
<p>On july 1st 2007, all the UK became smoke free when England introduced a smoking ban.</p>
<p>I am sure that a lot of people are looking for stop smoking methods, but I wonder how many are digging their heels in, refusing to be dictated to.</p>
<p>HOW TO STOP SMOKING Did you know, that only 3% of people stop smoking using willpower alone?</p>
<p>We can assume then, that it would be advisable to have as much help as we can find.</p>
<p>There are many stop smoking programs and many nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products on the market. Stop smoking hypnosis is also an area you may wish to consider.</p>
<p>I personally found that patches were a great help, but I still needed two attempts with them and I had some really vivid dreams.</p>
<p>A while before I finally made my mind up to stop smoking, my two young daughters had begged me to quit, because the didn&#8217;t want their dad to die.</p>
<p>I wasn&#8217;t that keen on the idea myself, but you know what it&#8217;s like to be a smoker, we can always find good reasons (excuses) to continue smoking.</p>
<p>As it transpired, the request from my girls was to be a major source of inspiration in my quest to give up the weed.</p>
<p>When you start a stop smoking campaign, you need to approach it almost like a military campaign. Not quite on the scale of &#8216;Desert Storm&#8217;, but you will need to recruit as many allies as possible, because the enemy is cunning, devious and dangerous.</p>
<p>You should set the date you are going to become a non-smoker, and you should make this day one which you think will be stress free.</p>
<p>You should write your campaign details down and refer to them daily.<br />
Recruit friends and family to act as your stop smoking support, and try to avoid situations you know which will trigger off your craving for nicotine.</p>
<p>Whichever method YOU choose to finally quit smoking, you are doing something which will improve the quality of your life, and who knows how much improvement you are capable of.</p>
<p>So for anyone who has made the decision to quit, it is ok to say</p>
<p>QUIT, AND BE A WINNER!</p>

<p>Stop smoking benefit #1: Your blood is partially &#8216;disabled&#8217; by cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide, a lethal gas found in every cigarette you smoke binds to the haemoglobin in your red blood cells. The carbon monoxide locks the red blood cell and stops it from being able to carry oxygen around your body. Smoking knocks out about 15% of your blood&#8217;s oxygen carrying capacity. When you stop smoking, your body will repair your blood and it will be back to normal within 2 days!</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #2: Cigarette smoke and the cocktail of 3,500 chemicals found in it, have damaged nerves throughout your body. Within 2 days your body will start to re-grow these damaged nerves. Your sense of taste and smell will sharpen. You will not need to salt your food as heavily as you used to.</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #3: Smokers are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure. When you stop smoking, your blood pressure will come down without any other intervention just from stopping smoking. High blood pressure is known as the &#8216;silent killer&#8217; that often goes unnoticed in people of middle age. High blood pressure makes your heart work harder and can result in an enlarged heart and heart disease. It is advisable to ask you doctor for a blood pressure check the next time you see them.</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #4: 90% of all lung cancer sufferers are smokers. The vast majority of smokers stop smoking the minute they are diagnosed with lung cancer, proving that quitting is possible. 10 years after quitting smoking, your risk of lung cancer will have halved.</p>

Most significantly, smoking is a major contributor in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. COPD includes such illnesses as bronchitis (the inflammation of the lung bronchioles (tubes)) and emphysema. Emphysema is when your lung tissues lose their elasticity and you cannot breath normally. Death from emphysema comes in the form of a slow and utterly debilitating suffocation over the course of a few years. It is irreversible and incurable.</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #6: Between 5 and 15 years after quitting smoking, your risk of a stroke will have returned to that of a non-smoker (depending upon other influencing factors such as diet).</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #7: On average, smokers die between 8 and 10 years earlier than non-smokers. Stopping smoking even in middle age can reduce the risks of ill health significantly and there are always benefits in stopping smoking, no matter what your age.</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #8: After years of smoking, you will have suffered from a chronic cough. Between 3 and 12 months after stopping smoking, this cough should have disappeared.</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #9: Within 3 months of stopping smoking, your circulation should have improved significantly. If you used to suffer from &#8216;pins and needles&#8217;, they should be a thing of the past now. Your risk of heart attack will have reduced significantly.</p>
<p>Stop smoking benefit #10: Not only can you smell better you do smell better too! Your general odour will be much more pleasant to those around you.</p>
<p>There is a Japanese proverb that says &#8220;fall down seven times, get up eight&#8221;. Stopping smoking is just like that too. You have to keep trying to quit. My advice as ever is never stop trying to quit.</p>

Of the many methods to stop smoking out there, there are often very many very zany approaches amongst the more sensible ones.</p>
<p>My own take on quitting smoking came about after many months researching as many methods to stop smoking as I could. I came to realise over time that the most important method to stop smoking came solely from myself. The answer did not lie in a pill or a potion or some laser. The answer as to how to stops smoking comes from within. It is about having the right mindset.</p>
<p>Lets look at the common methods to stop smoking that most smokers will fight with several times before succeeding and becoming smoke free forever.</p>
<p>Cold Turkey or Willpower. This is the most obvious method to stop smoking. Get up one day and say &#8216;no&#8217; to cigarettes. Sometimes, people take a little more time over this method and fill out diaries to identify triggers and detail when and how much they smoke. Only 1 in 20 people who try to quit using this method will success. Or to put it another way, if you try 20 times you might actually do it!</p>
<p>Nicotine Replacement Therapy or NRT. This is the patch, gum, microtab, lozenge, inhalator or nasal spray aid method to stop smoking. It is much vaunted by the pharmaceutical industry as a means to help smokers quit. It boasts a 10% success rate &#8211; 1 in 10 people stop smoking. However, it is often overlooked that whilst 1 in 10 stop smoking, they do not overcome their addiction to nicotine &#8211; which is why smokers smoked in the first place.</p>
<p>If you remain addicted to nicotine, then you are always at risk of falling back into the spiral of despair that is smoking cigarettes and consigning yourself to an early grave.</p>

<p>Zyban is another of the many methods to stop smoking. The drug is also known as wellbutrin or bupropion, and although unknown exactly how, it seems to interfere with a smoker&#8217;s brain chemistry and put them off smoking. Legend has it that the smoking cessation factor of Zyban was only seen whilst studying the side effects of wellbutrin, the anti-depression version of the drug.</p>
<p>Zyban boast about the same effectiveness as a method to stop smoking as NRT but this can be improved 50% or so when Zyban and NRT are used together. However, the use of these drugs also goes hand in hand with some form of counselling to motivate smokers to stop.</p>
<p>The new &#8216;wonder drug&#8217; taking the market is varenicline or Chantix (Champix in the UK). It is reported to be able to wean up to 44% of smokers off cigarettes. Again, like Zyban, it is not know exactly how it works but is is thought to interfere with the brain chemistry of the smoker.</p>
<p>Both Zyban and Chantix as methods of stopping smoking come with dangers. Zyban is known to cause seizures in some patients and varenicline causes extreme nausea in up to 30% of patients. Both drugs need a course of counselling alongside the drug in order to be effective.</p>
<p>Hypnosis is another well known method for quitting smoking. I understand (although I am not a big fan of hypnosis) that it can achieve much better success rates than any of the previously mentioned methods. Of the methods to stop smoking that are available, hypnosis is very relaxing and involves no drugs which cannot be a bad thing.</p>
<p>Another method to stop smoking is the use of cognitive behavioural therapy or CBT. It can literally be translated as &#8216;think&#8217; and &#8216;behave&#8217; therapy. The way you think and the way you behave are examined in order to change the way you think and thus the way you react to your thoughts, feelings and environment. CBT uses neither drugs nor your sub-conscious mind.</p>
<p>The fact of the matter is that most people do not &#8216;control&#8217; their lives; they just react to their emotions and feelings. If you feel down, you might comfort eat for example. That is not eating because you are hungry, it is eating to take your mind off something else.</p>
<p>Using CBT can be an extremely successful treatment to help people stop smoking permanently. Of the people I follow-up who have used my own CBT course, the people who succeed (and that is an overwhelming majority) not only stop smoking but actually know they will never smoke again and that is because they have a different attitude toward smoking, having used CBT.</p>
<p>Stopping smoking is an amazing achievement for any smoker and one that should be celebrated whichever method to stop smoking is used. Stopping smoking and knowing you will never smoke ever again can only be achieved through changing your mental attitude towards smoking, whether that be through counselling, hypnosis or CBT.</p>
<p>As ever, the most important method to stop smoking is to never stop trying to stop.</p>
